Personalised Medicine: How Pharmacogenomics (PGx) can Transform Patient Care

This webinar explores the field of Pharmacogenomics (PGx) and its significant impact on personalised medicine. PGx is the study of how genes affect a person's response to drugs. This emerging field combines pharmacology and genomics to develop effective, safe medications and doses tailored to a person's genetic makeup.

Key Topics Covered:
  1. Introduction to Pharmacogenomics
    • Definition and scope of Pharmacogenomics.
    • Discussion of panel testing vs single testing
  2. Mechanisms of PGx:
    • How genetic variations influence drug metabolism and efficacy.
    • The role of genetic testing in identifying these variations.
  3. Clinical Applications:
    • Case studies showcasing successful integration of PGx in patient care.
    • Examples of drugs with well-established pharmacogenomic guidelines.
  4. Benefits of PGx in Personalised Medicine:
    • Improved drug efficacy and safety.
    • Reduction in adverse drug reactions and trial-and-error prescribing.
  5. Considerations:
    • Ethical, legal, and social implications.
    • Cost, accessibility, and the need for healthcare provider education.
  6. Future Directions:
    • Research trends and potential future developments in PGx.

Learning Outcomes:
  1. Understanding of Pharmacogenomics:
    • Gain a comprehensive understanding of what pharmacogenomics is and how it operates within the broader scope of personalised medicine.
  2. Knowledge of Genetic Influences on Drug Response:
    • Learn how genetic variations can affect drug metabolism and response, leading to more effective and safer medication use.
  3. Application in Clinical Practice:
    • Recognise the practical applications of PGx in clinical settings through real-world examples and case studies.
  4. Identification of Benefits and Challenges:
    • Understand the benefits of PGx in improving patient care and the challenges that need to be addressed for its broader implementation.
  5. Awareness of Future Trends:
    • Stay informed about the latest research and future directions in the field of Pharmacogenomics, and how it might shape the future of personalised medicine.

By the end of the webinar, participants will be equipped with the knowledge to understand the transformative potential of PGx in patient care and will be aware of both the opportunities in implementing PGx in clinical practice.

Dr Mark Hudson-Peacock

Chair & Speaker: Dr Mark J Hudson-Peacock, BSc(Hons), MBBCh, FRCP, MIoD - Chair/Medical Director, Mantara

Talk title: Introduction to Pharmacogenomics & Benefits

Biography: Dr Mark Hudson-Peacock is a Consultant Dermatologist and CMO for The Dermatology Partnership. He is an entrepreneur and is the co-founder/Chairman and Medical Director of the eXroid group of companies and the founder/Chairman and Medical Director of Mantara Health Ltd, responsible for launching the first commercially available Pharmacogenomics (PGx) test in the UK which has full MHRA registration and both CE and UKCA marks.

Therapeutics has always been a passion for him and with this knowledge he wanted to drive better and safer prescribing for patients in the UK by introducing an evidence based, affordable PGx product, having been an advisor for a US PGx company for a few years and realising the great potential this would have. Sustainability is also a passion and PGx feeds very nicely into this agenda, by significantly reducing drug waste. Understanding that 90% of medications prescribed, only work in 30-50% of patients, is the starting point.

PGx provides the opportunity to change this narrative significantly, by driving personalised medicine using a simple saliva test to generate individual medication reports for individuals to use with all their HCPs, thus allowing the right medication to be prescribed at the right dose first time, rather than the current trial and error prescribing that is carried out.

Professor Daniela Steinberger

Speaker: Professor Daniela Steinberger, MD, MBA - Scientific Cooperation Partner, Mantara
