Statistics and Experimental Design Training Workshop 2024

We are delighted to be running this two-day in person training workshop as part of our Pharmacology 2024 satellite programme of events.

You will be coached in the use of GraphPad Prism and other tools as you work through problems in groups. This training course is aimed at early career scientists and industry professionals needing to deepen their knowledge and understanding of experimental statistics.

Do join us in Harrogate for a series of expert talks and small group problem-based learning sessions.

Learning Outcomes

Following this training day, the participant will be able to:

1.    Identify differences between data distributions
2.    Identify the appropriate descriptive statistics to summarise different data sets
3.    Identify the appropriate inferential statistical test to analyse different data sets
4.    Draw appropriate conclusions following inferential statistical analysis.

Dr Paul J Mitchell

Paul Mitchell is Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacy and Pharmacology at the University of Bath, and Adjunct Lecturer at NUIGalway.  Paul has over 47 years’ experience in pharmacology, including over 15 years in the pharmaceutical industry with Beecham Pharmaceuticals (1975 – 1985) and Wyeth-Ayerst (1989- 1995).  Paul’s research interests are in the application of ethological techniques to the analysis of rodent non-social, social and agonistic behaviour (and the effect(s) of psychotropic drug treatment thereon) and the validity of animal models used in psychotropic drug discovery (in particular antidepressants, anxiolytics, antipsychotics and psychostimulants).

For the last 25 years or so Dr Mitchell has taught a range of subjects in pharmacology (from receptor theory and autonomic pharmacology to advanced pharmacology of the central nervous system), at both undergraduate and post-graduate level, with particular emphasis on fundamental and practical aspects of experimental design and statistical analysis applied to in vitro, in vivo and behavioural pharmacology.

Dr Mitchell has been a member of the British Pharmacological Society since 1985 and is currently working closely with the society to organise residential training workshops focused on the principles of robust, rigorous, experimental design and statistical analysis, accompanied by his recent textbook publication Experimental Design and Statistical Analysis for Pharmacology and the Biomedical Sciences (Wiley, 2022, ISBN 9781119437635).
Professor John Kelly

John Kelly is Professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, at NUI, Galway.  Prof. Kelly has over 42 years’ experience in pharmacological and toxicological research, 8 of which have been spent in industry.  Current areas of research include the mechanisms of action of antidepressants using preclinical models, and the effects of early social isolation on rodent development.  This research has resulted in over 100 peer-reviewed publications, and the textbook Principles of CNS drug development: from test tube to patient (Wiley, ISBN 9780470519790) published in 2010.

Professor Kelly has been involved in developing a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Pharmacology for Science, Medicine, Nursing and Health Science students, with a particular emphasis on developing experimental skills that are appropriate for the different student groups.  Prof. Kelly received the President’s Award for Teaching Excellence, within the College of Medicine Nursing and Health Sciences in 2021, and for NUI Galway in 2011

Dr Mitchell and Prof. Kelly have collaborated for over 17 years in the development of teaching strategies to educate both undergraduate and postgraduate students in the Life and Biomedical Sciences of the fundamental principles of robust statistical analysis within the experimental design process.
