Speaker: Professor David Nutt FMedSci FBPhS, Imperial College London 

Biography: David Nutt FMedSci is a psychiatrist and prof of neuropsychopharmacology at Imperial College London. He trained at Cambridge, Guys Hospital, Oxford University and NIH in the USA. His research focuses on how drugs work in the brain and the mechanisms underpinning psychiatric disorders particularly addiction and depression. He has published over 700 research papers, 38 books and 8 government reports. He founded the charity Drug Science in 2009 and won the John Maddox prize for standing up for science in 2013. His current research is on the therapeutic value of illegal drugs particularly cannabis and psychedelics.

Speaker: BPS President Elect Professor Emeritus Cherry Wainwright, Robert Gordon University.

Biography: Cherry Wainwright is Professor Emeritus at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen. Cherry's research focuses on mechanisms underlying the pathophysiology and the identification of novel therapeutic targets of cardiovascular diseases. Of particular interest is target validation, through evaluation of the role of endogenous biological mediators in myocardial and vascular injury, and the identification of natural-product-derived compounds as cardio- and vasculo-protective substances. Prof Wainwright is a Fellow and President Elect of the Society and a member of the IUPHAR Natural Products Section Committee.
